Department of Biological Sciences at IISER-Bhopal started functioning in August 2008 with the enrolment of the first batch of students for the BS-MS integrated course. The aim of the department is to foster knowledge in students pertaining to basic and advanced areas of biological sciences by not only pursuing both teaching and high-quality research but also through integrating biology with physics, chemistry and mathematics. The academic and research contributions of the faculties in this department have been recognized in the form of publications, projects, fellowships and awards.

STUDENTS: The department of Biological Sciences has students enrolled into either BS-MS dual degree or PhD program.

BS-MS Dual Degree Program: This is a comprehensive 5-year program wherein students take core courses across the different disciplines of science in the first two years. The core courses in biology have been designed to allow students to get a strong understanding of the basic concepts in several areas of biology, including but not limited to biochemistry, structural biology, genetics, cell and molecular biology, etc. The laboratory sessions designed for these courses helps them appreciate the concepts learnt in parallel to the class room lectures. The professional courses available to students third year onwards have been carefully designed to encompass all the classical as well as the advanced areas of biology. In addition, students are also encouraged to register for elective courses offered by other departments. This motivates them to initiate an interdisciplinary approach in scientific research. The fifth year is completely devoted to research work with a few short courses also being offered by the department in frontier areas of biology. The students, in this year carry out a research project under the supervision of a mentor (faculty). Students graduating from this program thus are expected to have a sound conceptual knowledge with motivation towards research in biological sciences (adopting an interdisciplinary approach). This should definitely help them in taking up suitable jobs in industry or move into academia for pursuing a PhD.


PhD Program: Students admitted into the PhD program are associated officially with a faculty member at the time of registration. The first year of the PhD program comprises of a rigorous course work wherein the students register for courses offered by this department with an option to also choose from those offered by other departments depending upon their interest. The course work allows students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the concepts aiding them in their research. Subsequently, students are also evaluated for their suitability to pursue their PhD through several systems, including a comprehensive examination and a state-of-the-art seminar. In addition to being involved in research with a particular mentor, students are also motivated towards presenting their research work as departmental seminars and to publish their research findings in peer-reviewed international scientific journals and conferences. After successful completion of the research work, the thesis dissertation submitted by the student is evaluated by a panel of reviewers and is then recommended for the award of a PhD degree.


FACULTY: The department has faculty members with expertise in different disciplines of biological sciences. Faculty members have a strong motivation not only to perform research in frontiers areas of biology but also to impart a research integrated teaching to the students. Well equipped research laboratories with research projects funded by different government and international agencies allows faculty members to pursue their research interests that provide an exciting opportunity to students to get involved in diverse research projects.

 BS-MS Dual Degree Program

  • Core Courses: In the first and second year of the program, students register for core courses across the spectrum of scientific disciplines.  The syllabus for each of the core courses offered by this department has been designed to introduce fundamental biological concepts to students from different scientific backgrounds. This not only helps students from a biology background but also allows students from a non biology background to develop a flair for biology. Thus at the end of the second year, irrespective of the scientific discipline that students opt to major in, fundamental biological principles get firmly ingrained in their minds. The core courses also have a laboratory component helping students to appreciate concepts learnt in parallel in lectures.  

  • Professional Courses: Students majoring in biological sciences in the third and fourth year register for the professional courses offered by this department.  These professional courses are a combination of both mandatory courses and elective courses (either departmental or open electives offered by other departments).  The mandatory and the departmental elective professional courses offered are designed to encompass all the classical areas of biology.  Each of these courses again has a laboratory component attached to it giving an opportunity for students to learn and perform advanced biological experiments. 

   

      Ph.D Program

Course Work: In the the first year of the PhD program, students are involved in rigorous course work registering for courses offered by this department.  Some of these courses are exclusive Ph.D level courses or are courses also offered to the 4th year or the 5th year (short module) BS-MS students.  Students depending upon their interests also have the option to register for courses offered by other departments as long as the credit requirements are fulfilled.
