In Memoriam: Dr. Sathish Narayanan
Sathish belonged to the medical town of Vellore. He chose to complete his higher studies from Vellore and completed Bachelors and Masters Degree in Science with Gold medals each time from Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore. He had strong inclination in clinical aspect of medical sciences and he gained experience in Medical lab technology and Medical Microbiology. During his M.Sc. he particularly got interested in studies involving cancer. Sathish enrolled in PhD program at Department of Clinical Virology in CMC, Vellore. Sathish picked particular interest in Human papillomavirus (HPV) induced cervical cancer in Indian population as his thesis question. He continued his inclination in interplay of cancer and virus and joined the Department of Microbiology at University of Pennsylvania, USA to develop greater understanding of Kaposi’s Sarcoma associated herpes virus (KSHV). After exemplary post-doctoral work with KSHV, he joined IISER Bhopal in May 2011 as Assistant Professor to start his own group. His research work as at IISER Bhopal, focused on tegument proteins of Herpes viruses to delineate the strategies that viruses adopt to modulate the cell biological and immunological processes of human host for establishing a successful infection.
It is saddest irony that the cancer, Sathish chose to study during his PhD, snatched him away from us.
