ENS-IISER Meeting on pedagogy and online teaching practices
Flyer
About: The ENS IISER cooperation network, with the support of the French Embassy in India, is hosting its first French-Indian virtual workshop.
The partnership has been developing since 2016 when the first delegates from the 4 ENS in France carried out an exploratory visit of the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs).
Strong academic and scientific links were immediately identified as were common core values and mindset. Five years later, in spite of the global pandemic, the network is proud to publish successful results especially regarding the ENS/IISER Internship Program, several very satisfying bilateral visits to reinforce scientific collaboration and diplomatic relations and now the organisation of the first virtual workshop.
This workshop will be focused on the exchange of practices on education and pedagogical approaches, as well as the adaptation to online teaching in the current pandemic context.

Online colloquium on "Muon g-2: the showdown" by Dr. Massimo Passera at 5:30 PM IST.
Poster
Title: "Muon g-2: the showdown"
About the speaker: Dr. Massimo Passera is a faculty at INFN, Padua. He did his PhD from New York University. He is one of the leading experts in the world on this field.
Abstract: Muon is a short-lived fundamental particle. It has an electric charge -1 and spin 1/2. Due to their charge and spin, these fundamental particles can be thought of as tiny magnets. The magnetic strength of the particle is captured by a quantity known as the magnetic moment. The theory that describes these subatomic particles is known as the standard model of Particles. The predictions of these theories have been verified by experiment to a high degree of accuracy. This talk about the recent ground breaking experiment at Fermilab for muon magnetic moments. The experimentally observed value was found to be different from the theoretical predictions of the standard model. Such a result has put a question mark to our current understanding and it opens the possibilities to look for alternatives. This talk is about muon magnetic moment, Fermilab experiment, and possible new physics

A webinar by Prof. Helen Quinn on National Science Day at 10:00 AM (IST).
Abstract | Zoom Link
Title: " Goals For Teaching and Learning Science" Abstract of the talk: This talk will present a vision of the learning goals for learning science, particularly for school and undergraduate level science, informed by my work as chair of the National Academy committee asked to define "A Framework for k-12 Science Education" for the United States. We, the committee, called this vision "three-dimensional science learning". Starting in elementary school, the goal should be student ability to engage in the practices of science (dimension 1. Science and Engineering practices), to use the conceptual tools that scientists and engineers use (dimension 2. crosscutting concepts), and to apply the science ideas they are learning (dimension 3. disciplinary core ideas), to examine previously unexplained phenomena or poorly defined problems, things they meet in the real world. I will talk about how redefining the learning goals requires a rethinking of both the teaching and the testing (assessment) of science learning.
Brief Biography of the Speaker:
Prof. Helen Quinn is a particle physicist and an educator. Prof. Quinn joined Harvard University as an assistant professor in 1972 and finally joined SLAC as a professor in physics. She has made path-breaking contributions in theoretical particle physics. Prof. Quinn is not only a renowned physicist, simultaneously she is an educator. She confounded and became the first president of the Contemporary Physics Education Project (CPEP) at SLAC.
Prof. Quinn has obtained several awards and prizes for her major contributions that include the Dirac Medal from ICTP. This amazing combination of a passionate physicist and passionate educator makes her truly unique.

Refresher Course on Partial Differential Equations and their Applications (PDEA-2017)
The Partial Differential Equations (PDE) is a basic topic of research and teaching in mathematics. The abstract theory behind this topic is also most important from the point of view of applications in large number of areas of science and engineering, such as geometry, economics, hydrodynamics, elasticity, general relativity, geometric flows, just to name a few. The main aim of this course is to highlight essence, beauty and importance of PDE (both in mathematics and in areas of applications) as a subject with deep mathematical structures. This course will therefore provide an excellent opportunity to young teachers, researchers and students from various educational institutions of the country to interact and learn important topics on PDE and its applications from some of the experts of this subject.
